When Rav Yehuda Zev Segal (June 24, 1910 - February 13, 1993), better known as the Manchester Rosh Yeshiva, was only eight, an incident occurred that changed his life forever, as he told a close talmid more than 50 years later. "As I was crossing the street in London," he told his talmid, "a city bus suddenly veered toward me. The driver turned on the brakes, and the bus halted only inches away from me. I was only eight at the time. Nonetheless, after this incident I realized that if life in this world can end within a second, then we certainly weren’t created in order to enjoy the here and now. I also felt that so great a miracle obligated me to dedicate myself to service of Hashem." And dedicate himself he did! The Manchester Rosh Yeshiva was always striving, always selfless, always guiding others to learn and grow and develop new ways to bring the Jewish people closer to their Maker - this was the day-in-day-out story of this incomparable tzaddik and Torah genius.
